Sen. Michael Baumgartner, R-Spokane, offered the following comment after Gov. Jay Inslee signed House Bill 1559 into law April 1, repealing a 98-year-old law giving the University of Washington the exclusive right to operate a public medical school, and authorizing Washington State University to launch a medical school in Spokane. Baumgartner, a WSU graduate, introduced an identical bill in the Senate this session. As the governor signed the bill, lawmakers and other supporters burst into song.

“It is an historic day for Spokane and for Washington. And singing the Washington State University fight song with a bipartisan group of legislators while the governor signed the bill was one of the highlights of my legislative career.”
